Bismarck served as capital of the Dakota Territory from 1883 to 1889, when North Dakota entered the union and the city became the state capital. The original capitol building burned down in 1930, and construction began on the new capitol, pictured, in 1933. The white limestone structure encompasses a 19-story tower of executive and judicial offices, connected through a vast hallway to the quarters of the state legislature
