Southwestern North Dakota is known for its scenic, often rugged, terrain and the historic Theodore Roosevelt National Park. An arid region of the park called the Badlands features striking rock masses and hills separated by snaking valleys. The Badlands were formed by erosion when bursts of heavy rain followed periods of drought.
