Ascending through Paraguay’s military, Alfredo Stroessner became commander in chief of the armed forces in 1951. With the backing of the military and the conservative Colorado Party, he seized control of the country in 1954. He maintained his power by dictatorial methods until he was overthrown in a coup in 1989.
